Whether you are a diehard aficionado or someone who likes the occasional cold one, beer is synonymous with many different things. Most of us can agree, however, that beer is best enjoyed in its tapped form; fresh and foamy, served in a chilled pint glass or mug. You’d be hard-pressed though, to get that “straight from the tap taste” at home. Sure, some companies have tried to market the “take home keg” but most have sorely missed the mark. What’s a beer lover to do?

Thank goodness we have Kevin Clark in our midst. The visionary Brewer from Peter B’s Brewpub located behind the Portola Hotel & Spa has graced our taste buds with his wonderful creations for a couple years and now he is offering the perfect way to enjoy them at home. Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce you to the Growler & Growlette!

The six pint Growler ($25 or $10 for refills) or two pint Growlette ($10 or $5 for refills) allow fans of Clark’s wizardry to choose their favorite flavor and enjoy the taste at home. The brown glass bottles keep the beer fresh and can be returned for refills as needed, but must be consumed off property. Clark is constantly debuting small batch craft brews to go along with his regular offerings so contact the folks at Peter B’s Brewpub to see what’s on tap!

Kids on the Peninsula

When most people think of the Monterey Peninsula they think of beautiful golf courses, million dollar homes and some of the world’s most famous events. Others think of miles of pristine coastline, romantic walks along the water and shopping and dining. But some do not realize the amount of kid-friendly activities available.  With as many family friendly activities as there are par fours, Mom, Dad and the little ones can have the time of their lives. Oh, and if the “little ones” are actually teenagers…there is plenty for them to do as well.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium on Historic Cannery Row is one of the world’s premiere displays of aquatic marvels. The Splash Zone is entirely devoted to kids and kids of all ages and the aquarium as a whole can keep the family interested for hours, but what about the next day?

How about Dennis the Menace Park located by Lake El Estero in Monterey? Hank Ketchum, the legendary creator of the cartoon icon Dennis the Menace made Carmel his home and this park brings the same smile to all who come. Free and open seven days a week, the park is perfect for families and offers a multitude of play structures, tunnels, bridges and a maze. The cornerstone of the park is an actual Steam Engine that can be climbed and played upon, if you’re looking for something indoors, try the interactive, hands-on Monterey County (MY) Museum.

If you are traveling with kids a little older, check out the paddle boats available for rent on Lake El Estero directly behind the park. It’s a great time and you can get up close and personal with the ducks, Canadian Geese and swans that make the lake their home (don’t forget the breadcrumbs!) Or, for a more radical departure, make a visit to the free skate park also adjacent to Dennis the Menace. With exciting elements to challenge the skills of skateboarders and in-line skaters, this park was created with input from community skaters resulting in a fantastic design overlooking the lake. Between glow-in-the-dark mini golf on Cannery Row, hiking at Point Lobos to kayaking on the Bay, an activity for every member of the family awaits!

Most all of these activities are within walking distance of the Portola Hotel & Spa making a trip to the Peninsula one of ease and most importantly fun! With green grass, picnic benches and the beach just across the street, why not order a delicious lunch to go from Peter B’s Brewpub and enjoy a wonderful day!

Portola Burger; the best burger in town

Burger & Beer @ Peter B’s Brewpub

Since the 18th century, the humble hamburger has graced the plates of commoners and kings throughout Europe and the United States. Originally a “food fit for a king” (literally as it was only the wealthy aristocracy that could afford it) it was brought to America by German immigrants who had adapted the dish to fit their station, shredding low-grade beef and mixing it with regional spices and serving it both cooked and raw. As the dish caught on, it began to be served on bread during the late 1800′s and soon made its way onto the menus of restaurants across the country. As its popularity grew, so did the styles of burger as well as the types of establishments serving it. Synonymous with fast food, the hamburger stood pat for many years and different chains competed to see who could serve the most, not the best.

That trend began to change in the late 1980′s as chefs in high end restaurants began to experiment with prime cuts of beef and expensive condiments. From Kobe to Angus and everything in between, the hamburger now is served alongside the most extravagant dishes in the most exclusive restaurants in America.

That is why Portola Hotel & Spa’s Executive Chef extraordinaire Jason Giles is proud to introduce The Portola Burger, quickly becoming known as “The Best Burger In Town”. The burger features 1/2 pound of hand formed certified Angus ground chuck grilled to perfection and served on a toasted Brioche bun. It comes with locally grown red leaf lettuce, shaved white onion and the Chef Giles’ very own special B&B sauce. As an extra treat the dish is also served with homemade pickles!

Served at Jacks Restaurant & Lounge for lunch and at Peter B’s Brewpub, The Portola Burger a “must-indulge” on your burger bucket list!

One of the best trends to hit the U.S. since skinny jeans is the rise of the craft brewery. Sure, bottled micro brews have been around for a while, but many of those have been snatched up by the bigger producers or are simply carbon copies of each other with different packaging. The true art of craft beer starts with the brewer and no one is doing it better on the Monterey Peninsula than Brewer Kevin Clark at Peter B’s Brewpub located behind the Portola Hotel & Spa.

Bright, comfortable and unadorned with the typical pub/sports bar decor, Peter B’s Brewpub gives you a familiar feeling even if it is your first visit. The service is smooth and knowledgeable, but it is the fare that really impresses. Their beer is brewed on site and Clark mixes and melds like a mad scientist creating some unique seasonal choices and time tested favorites. What’s better, is the staff pairs these offerings with their eclectic line up of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees some created with the very beer brewed, just a few feet away!

Peter B’s Brewpub offers 15 high definition TV’s so you can catch the game or event of your choice, Buzztime Interactive Gaming to play with friends or enjoy the dog-friendly patio just steps from Monterey’s Historic Custom House Plaza. It’s large enough for a group of friends to gather, but intimate enough to have a quiet business lunch. Wine’s little brother beer is all grown up and has planted the Craft Brewery flag at Peter B’s Brewpub at behind the Portola Hotel & Spa.

Cool fact: The Portola Hotel & Spa is the only independent hotel in the U.S. to house their very own craft brewery!
