RM Sotheby’s Important Cars in Monterey – Guest Blog by Jeremy Malcolm

We at RM Sotheby’s have been holding our flagship auction in Monterey for more than 25 years. The tradition was built around the week-long festival known as Monterey Car Week, an annual event that celebrates all things automotive. Every year, over 100 of the world’s finest cars are offered in our auction, drawing out the who’s who of the car community to buy, sell, and enjoy the automotive art.  Every year seems to be better than the last, and our 2016 event will be no exception. Among the important cars available will be a handful that are only offered once in a lifetime. Here are some of the highlights from the 2016 Monterey auction, available on the 19th and 20th of August.

1962 Shelby 260 Cobra “CSX 2000”

    Shelby Cobra

The 1962 Shelby Cobra “CSX 2000” was the first example of this iconic car ever built.

As the first ever Shelby Cobra built, the importance of this car cannot be understated. The title “CSX 2000” represents the chassis number of the instantly recognizable genesis to the iconic model. Built, driven, and owned by the company’s founder and namesake Carroll Shelby, the car remained with him throughout his life, never being offered for sale in the 54 years of its existence. Following Mr. Shelby’s passing, the car remained with the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust and was placed on display at the Shelby American Museum in Las Vegas. Available for the first time ever at the Portola Hotel & Spa on August 19th, the car will draw the eyes of the world.

1955 Jaguar D-Type

Jaguar D-Type

This 1955 Jaguar D-type won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1956.

One of the most important races in motorsports is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an annual race held in Le Mans, France. In 1956, the Jaguar D-Type took the checkered flag with the very car being offered in Monterey. A car’s collectability and value is decided by looks, performance, history, and originality, and this D-Type scores a perfect 10 in all categories. Certainly the most important competition car available, you can expect the D-Type to sell well into the eight figures with a pre-sale estimate of $20,000,000 – $25,000,000.

1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider

Alfa Romeo 8C

Offered for public sale for the first time this century, the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider is the ultimate pre-war car.

The quintessential pre-war Italian car, this 8C 2900 is one of just 12 of its type. The cars rarely change hands, and even more seldom change hands publically, so RM Sotheby’s is thrilled to offer the car on behalf of collectors Sam and Emily Mann. With a pre-sale estimate of $20,000,000 – $25,000,000, the sale of this mechanical masterpiece is sure to be a highlight of Monterey Car Week’s events.
